Description
The Wild Beaches trail starts in Barra de Guaratiba and runs along section 1 of the Transcarioca highway, the first long-distance trail in Brazil. There will be 9 km of trail, starting and finishing at the same point.
The Wild Beaches Circuit is moderately difficult and very exposed to the sun, so we advise you to wear sunscreen and a hat. We start at Barra de Guaratiba Beach and head up through the community in the direction of the trail. Within the Atlantic Forest, we cross the top of the mountain and descend to Inferno Beach, the first wild beach on the route. It's 200m long, with clear sands, blue sea and strong waves, our first stopping point for contemplation and swimming.
Between Praia do Inferno and Praia Funda, there's a place called Pedra da Lua (Moon Rock), a rock formation with holes that imitate the craters on the moon. It's a great place to take funny and conceptual photos and videos.
Shortly after Pedra da Lua, we arrived at the second beach of this adventure, Praia Funda, another 300m deserted beach surrounded by unspoiled nature, rock walls and lots of Atlantic Forest. After enjoying the sea, the sound of the waves and the birds, we head towards Praia do Meio, passing through the first technical section, a steep climb up the coast, between the rocks and with the help of a fixed rope. We walk for another 1km and arrive at the third deserted beach, Praia do Meio, the largest of the Wild Beaches, where we stop for a snack and a rest in the shadows of the restinga, the typical vegetation of the beach.
After recovering our energy, we continue on to the second technical section, another steep climb up the rocky coastline, a section with natural obstacles, which we will overcome with the help of the fixed ropes on site. The view of the Wild Beaches is breathtaking, with distant views of the beaches of Recreio, Barra da Tijuca and the massif of mountains in the Tijuca Forest.
The Wild Beaches trail continues through the Atlantic Forest, until it descends to Praia do Perigoso, with its more protected and calmer waters than the previous ones. This is the most frequented beach on the Wild Beaches itinerary, and due to its proximity to the Barra de Guaratiba neighborhood, many people venture there. It has a little more infrastructure, as some locals offer the service of selling drinks. Right next to Praia do Perigoso, there is Praia das Conchas, so called because of its thick sand and rocks on the shore.
After enjoying the five Wild Beaches of Rio de Janeiro, we'll return to the Transcarioca trail in the direction of the Barra de Guaratiba neighborhood, where we'll toast the adventure and take the shuttle back to Barra da Tijuca.
