Description
Discover Rio as an archipelago city: not a single city, but many realities that coexist, meet, and sometimes remain separate. In a small group, travel from Largo do Machado to Lapa with an accredited Argentine guide who has been living in Brazil for about ten years. The duration varies between 4.5 and 5.5 hours, depending on the option chosen.
Start at Largo do Machado, where the bustle of the streets introduces the central idea of the experience: “one Rio, many cities.” Continue through Catete, observing the architecture, commerce, and transformations of a neighborhood marked by the capital's former political life. Pass through the gardens of the Museu da República and admire the exterior of the Palácio do Catete while learning stories about power, the Republic, and urban changes.
Continue towards Guanabara Bay through Prainha da Glória and Aterro do Flamengo. Compare the old coastline with the landscape created by the land reclamation and see how the sea, mountains, parks, roads, and buildings reveal different city designs. At the Monument to São Sebastião, learn about the origins of Rio, the figure of Estácio de Sá, and the disputes that marked its foundation.
Climb to Outeiro da Glória and discover the Church of Nossa Senhora da Glória, its architecture, its religious dimension, and its relationship with imperial history. From the top, observe the bay and the different layers of the city that has expanded around this historic spot.
Enter Lapa via Rua Morais e Vale and Rua Joaquim Silva. The great monuments give way to townhouses, alleys, street art, and memories of bohemian life. Stories linked to Chiquinha Gonzaga, Madame Satã and Manuel Bandeira reveal how music, literature, resistance and nightlife also built Rio's identity. Discover the Selaron Stairs and finish this part of the tour in front of the Carioca Aqueduct.
In the Tuesday to Friday option, the experience ends at the Arcos. On Saturdays, the tour continues to a samba circle in the area of Rua do Ouvidor and Rua do Mercado. On Sundays, after Outeiro, visit the Feira da Glória before heading through Morais and Vale, Selarón, and Arcos and ending at a samba circle or samba house.
The weekend samba is guaranteed, but the exact location is selected according to the cultural program for the date and may be in Lapa or the Old Town. Curatorship and accompaniment to the venue are included. Any admission ticket or cover charge, as well as food and beverages, are paid separately.
More than just visiting attractions, this walk invites you to observe the transitions between areas and understand how many Rios form a single city. There will be time for photos, questions, and conversation along the way.
