Description

Following pick-up from your hotel, transfer to the Botanical Garden in the 'Zone Sul' of Rio de Janeiro at the foot of Corcovado Mountain. Founded in 1808 by King João VI of Portugal, the Botanical Garden showcases the huge diversity of Brazilian and foreign flora in a 140-hectare park. Overlooked by the statue of Christ the Redeemer at the summit of Corcovado, the park contains more than 6,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees, including 900 varieties of palm trees. Discover monuments of historic, artistic and archaeological significance as you stroll, including an old gunpowder factory and the Fountain of the Muses. Site of an important research institute that develops a wide range of botanical studies in Brazil, the Botanical Garden is also home to delightful animals that have become accustomed to the presence of humans. Look for capuchin monkeys, tufted-eared marmosets and over 140 species of birds.
