Description
The itinerary proposed for the Petrópolis Imperial City tour is:
Visit to the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis. The Imperial Palace of Petrópolis, now the IMPERIAL MUSEUM, was the favorite residence of Emperor D. Pedro II and the setting for the best moments of the monarch's life, as he himself recorded in correspondence addressed to various people. Its construction was ordered by Pedro II himself, beginning in 1845 and completed in 1862. Admission included
Visit to São Pedro de Alcântara Cathedral; it was especially inspired by the ancient cathedrals of northern France and is dedicated to São Pedro de Alcântara, patron saint of the city of Petrópolis, Brazil, and of the Brazilian Monarchy. It houses the Imperial Mausoleum, which contains the remains of Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil, his wife, Empress Dona Teresa Cristina Maria de Bourbon, his daughter, Dona Isabel de Bragança, Imperial Princess of Brazil, and Dom Gastão de Orléans, Count of Eu and Imperial Prince Consort of Brazil, as well as the tombs of Prince Pedro de Alcântara de Orléans e Bragança and his wife, Dona Elisabeth Maria Adelaide Dobrzensky de Dobrzenicz. Interestingly, the person responsible for the construction was the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, the same person responsible for the construction of Christ the Redeemer.
Visit to the Santos Dumont house; it was the summer residence of Alberto Santos Dumont, the Father of Aviation, and is known as “A Encantada”. The museum has a collection of objects, books, letters, and furniture that belonged to the inventor, as well as the shower and the entrance staircase, with steps that can only be accessed starting with the right foot. (admission ticket included)
Visit to the Crystal Palace: Its pre-cast cast-iron structure was commissioned from a French foundry by Count d'Eu and assembled in Petrópolis by the engineer Eduardo Bonjean. It was inaugurated in 1884 to host the already traditional exhibitions of local vegetables and birds, which took place in temporary facilities on the site. In April 1888, the last slaves of Petrópolis were freed at the Palace, at a beautiful party attended by Princess Isabel.
Stroll through the shops on Rua Tereza, a traditional shopping center with clothing for all styles and budgets. Great prices. Variety and convenience, as the stores are along the entire length of the street. Restaurants and snacks on the street itself, as it is almost impossible to stop for a meal. It seems like there's always a store missing. The street also offers a clean bathroom, water, and a room with a TV for resting, and believe me, you'll need it. Sofas along the street also make shopping more enjoyable.
Chocolate factory shop; a quick stop for coffee. We visited the traditional factory and its delicious selection of incredible chocolates.
