Description
Your adventure starts at 8:00 AM at Point da Meire, at Estrada do Sorimã 932, in Itanhangá, near the start of the Pedra da Gávea hiking tour. There, the guide presents the itinerary, hands out the safety gear, and gives instructions before the climb.
The hiking tour covers about 8 km (5 miles) round-trip inside Tijuca National Park, one of the largest urban forests in the world. The first highlight is Sorimã Waterfall, followed by a stretch of steady uphill climbing in the shade of the Atlantic Forest, with stops for rest and hydration. Along the way, the guide shares interesting facts about the fauna, flora and legends of Pedra da Gávea.
Next, you'll pass Pedra do Navio (Ship Rock) and Paredão (Cliff), known as Casca (Bark), where the forest opens up and views of Barra da Tijuca, São Conrado and the ocean appear.
Near the top comes the most memorable part of the hike: the Carrasqueira scramble, a steep rock face where you use your hands and feet to climb. The guide accompanies you every step of the way and uses safety gear to ensure a worry-free ascent.
When you reach the plateau at the summit of Pedra da Gávea, about 844 meters above sea level, you'll have a 360° view of the beaches, the forest and the city of Rio de Janeiro. There's time to rest and have a snack, and the guide captures this moment with photos taken on an iPhone 15 Pro, which are included in the tour. Then, you descend via the same route, again with the guide's assistance at Carrasqueira.
The activity ends at the same place where it started, Point da Meire, after approximately 7 hours, with the feeling of having conquered one of Rio's most iconic mountains.
