Founded in 1923, Portela was built in a place where the black people of a city marked by slavery found shelter, strength and direction. Since 1923, Portela has been defining the tradition of samba and has accumulated 22 titles, making it the biggest winner of the Carioca Carnival. You're about to meet one of the most traditional samba schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The Portela samba school was founded over 100 years ago in Oswaldo Cruz, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. The Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela is one of the most popular Carnival groups in Rio de Janeiro and one of the oldest in the country, with a history of over 100 years filled with titles and memorable parades that justify the nickname 'The Majesty of Samba'. The school is located in a black neighborhood, Madureira, which once welcomed freed black slaves from the Paraíba Valley. This influence marks Portela's history and its representativeness in the world of samba. Duration: 4h. Saturdays On Saturdays, our Rota do Samba Carioca takes place in the Salgueiro square, in the Grande Tijuca region. Acadêmicos do Salgueiro is a traditional samba school that often has carnival themes, stories and African elements. It has several championships and is one of the most popular in Rio de Janeiro. The visit to the quadra includes a pagode show that opens the show at the house, and then, around midnight, the bateria show begins with the presence of the bateria queen - always a local celebrity. Throughout the night, professional dancers perform on the school floor to ensure the best rehearsal in preparation for the world's biggest carnival party on the samba catwalk. Experience a bit of the Salgueiro community on an unforgettable day! Duration: 4h. We'll pick you up from your hotel in the South Zone or one nearby. The experience starts at 9:30 PM and returns at 2:00 AM, with the company of a bilingual Tour Guide throughout the tour. Get to know the best of Rio's culture with a company that specializes in Afro-Brazilian culture!
