Description
This tour is not just a journey into the past, but a walk toward understanding the history of resistance and the appreciation of Black and Indigenous cultures. It seeks to decolonize the traditional historical narrative, challenging concepts that do not contribute to societal growth. We will share both well-known and untold stories, reconstructing narratives and reviving characters erased from Brazil's history.
Our main mission is to bring to light untold, erased, and undercelebrated stories, highlighting the ethnic and cultural diversity that shaped Brazil through the contributions of Indigenous peoples, Africans, Europeans, and their descendants. Rediscover Rio de Janeiro's Historic Center in an inclusive and recontextualized way, incorporating the latest research on Brazil's history.
Tour Highlights - Main attractions:
1. São Bento Monastery
The tour begins at São Bento Monastery, a Baroque architectural gem founded in 1590. Here, we admire the monastery's beauty while highlighting the contributions of enslaved Black laborers to its construction and maintenance—contributions often omitted from official history.
2. Rua do Ouvidor
On Rua do Ouvidor, we delve into the history of commerce and daily life in colonial and imperial Rio. We honor the contributions of Africans and their descendants, who played critical roles in the urban economy as artisans, street vendors, and market workers.
3. Praça XV
At Praça XV, one of the city's oldest and most significant locations, we highlight the story of the Revolt of the Lash, led by João Cândido, the 'Black Admiral,' in 1910. This event stands as a landmark in the fight against oppression and social injustice in Brazil. The square also served as a meeting and resistance point for the Black community over the centuries.
A Decolonial Experience
This guided tour challenges hegemonic narratives and celebrates the resilience, culture, and contributions of Afro-Brazilians and Indigenous peoples.
